Well, the Studio on the Isle of Wight has, and still is, witnessing a really busy time apparently. This is in complete contrast to the Antique and Collectors Fairs that we (Artius Glass) stand at, which is a phenomena that we simply can’t explain. We would like to assume that all the promotion we engage in, promoting and singing the praises of the Studio, pays dividends for the encouragement of enthusiasts to visit and watch the most accomplished master glassmaker (one Timothy Harris) this side of the ‘big pond’ pays dividends, and so it should.
We enjoy seeing all those we do meet and greet and do still have some fairs to go to this year, including a specialist glass fair, which for the first time now includes a selection of ceramic specialists for added interest. Location – Gaydon, Oxfordshire. More details in ‘Other News’.
Now that we are into the last, and usually the most lucrative, quarter of the year i.e. pre Christmas (sorry to have to mention that for all you parents with youngsters) and we know the feeling but Tempest Fugit and it has always been thus but there it is ~ it will soon be over and then you can use the next few months to pay it all off!
Here is a reminder, and some of you may have noticed, that we have increasingly added a good smattering of special pieces from glassmakers other than I.of W. S.G. on our website pages. Even though we are known as “Mr. & Mrs. Isle of Wight Glass” – I have been involved with many other fabulous glass makers over the last 45 years and some from other parts of the world even though my first love and loyalty has always been with my homeland – The Diamond Isle and it’s premier studio, I.of W. Studio Glass.
Anyway, in the meantime…
Now for a very special pretty picture!

Without doubt a piece, produced by Timothy Harris, with the most prodigeous provenance of any made by him over the past 40 plus years. And why?? Because it was commissioned on behalf of residents and businesses of the Isle of Wight to be presented by Timothy Harris to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to commemorate her royal visit to the Island during her 2012 Jubilee year.
How much more prestigeous can it get than that!
A total of only 5 were produced. They were naturally engraved to commemorate the event from No’s 1 ~ 5. No. 1 was presented to her on Cowes seafront by Timothy and now I believe resides in the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace. No.2 is being held in a special display cabinet at the Studio. No’s 3~5 were offered for sale to collectors and this is one such (No.5) as owned by one of our deceaced p.c.g members offered by his daughter for sale to you, our paid up collecters, through us. I can only say that by the nature of the situation this will naturally never happen again unless of course No’s 3 and 4 come onto the market at some point in the future. Please note the very substantial size of this piece.
Details of size and wording are shown below as well as Tim’s inscription on the base. As a matter of interest the way that the Seascape pattern has been produced is now known as ‘series 2’ denoting the way that the ‘wave peaks have been twirled with calliper points to interpret the rolling peaks of the waves. A lovely variation to the standard Seascape design. What a tribute to a special and beloved monarch.

One of a short lived series depicting the 4 seasons of the year. A mix of warm glowing colours of autumn leaves in a shape from an early design nicknamed by the glassmakers in the early eighties and known, tongue in cheek, as a ‘Twinky’ – don’t ask!!
Nonetheless certainly one of my personal favourite colour combinations not repeated from that day until this. This is an original ‘Trial’ and is marked as such as it was made especially for the Collectors Day in 2008 along with one of my other favourites known as ‘Winter’.

A most unusual and appealing shape and surface decoration used in several unique designs by Timothy Harris as you can see in the Queens Bowl above. First employed in 1995 in Gold Mosaic only, then extended to inlude Silver Mosaic as shown here. Finally discontinued in 2011 after a phenomenally succesful run of 16 years in many different poular shapes.

A beautiful example of what is the most recognisable of the original famous designs of Michael Harris – the famous ‘Fish Vase’. Still erroneously describe so frequently, in a famous auction site, as an ‘Axe Head’ or now increasingly called a ‘Fish Axe Head’ both of which are totally wrong! When Michael Harris designed the shape it was meant to interpret, when turned on its side, a trumpet fish – and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise because when I asked him many, many years ago, that is what he told me (about 40 years ago in fact).
Since Michael’s demise over 30 years ago, these have been executed to perfection by Timothy, his eldest son. Interestingly, considering it’s place in the great field of Studio Glass, I have never come across any glasmaker on a world wide stage who has ever ever attempted to copy this special design, which says it all.

Some years ago we ordered from Helen Millard some of her very special cameo carved miniatures. This is the first of the group and magnificent it is. We hope that others are in the pipeline. It is the natural representative of a ‘Tiger Moth’ after which the iconic early 20th century aircraft is named.
For interest it should be noted that for freehand cameo carving Helen has no equal on a worldwide scale, in our opinion, making these magnificent investable works of art a rather special investment.
In the joy of ownership as well as monetary value, as time will tell. For interest this piece took over 20 hours making time to complete and any work commissioned from her now would take up to two years to complete such is the demand for her work. Very special.

Other News
The ongoing new series of specialist glass fairs now run by the ever enthusiastic Richard Burtonshaw (click here for fair details) has now expanded its speciality status by adding ceramics to its product range thereby widening its product interest range. Should make it even more interesting. Location as in years goneby in the area of the Land Rover / Jaguar testing grounds.
That’s all folks!
As ever, our very best regards
Ron & Ann
