Artius Glass News / Sales Letter June 2025

Well, end of an era, as announced in our last interim letter recently that while the I. of W. Studio Glass priviledged collectors club no longer exists as a separate entity The Studio still does (as does the Isle of Wight for that matter!!) and Timothy Harris still possesses the wonderful designing juices which have blessed him all of his glass making life, we are pleased to say. A new example of this is the Crizzle Attenuated Bottle shown last month. Due to the exceptional response we have obtained another which is shown at the end of this letter. Again something very special in our opinion, as is so typical of the ‘Harris Dynasty – father, mother and sons. Do read the description beneath the piece.

We still run the Artius Glass p.c.g. and the Studio (I.o.W.S.G.) is still our main thrust along with some this country’s finest makers. Most of our stock of course is from retired items and ranges giving you something really collectable, worthwhile and investable for the future as well as the joy of ownership. As well as doing our best to find you the odd special gem giving you, our paid up members, the first pick via this letter. To give you an idea of the scope of our stock we carry items from Tim Harris, Michael Harris, (including M’dina Glass, Jonathan Harris, Peter layton, Paul Miller-Langham Glass, Siddy Langley, Richard Golding-Okra Glass, Holmegaard Glass-Royal Copenhagen, Terri L Colledge, Helen Millard, Michael James Hunter – Twists Glass and various others whom I have had the pleasure of being associated with in a previous life over the last 45 years (where did those years all go??!!) We have just attended what is now the only specialist Glass Fair, organised by Premier Fairs U.K, left in this country. It was held at the delightful venue known as Himley Hall just on the edge of the Glass quarter, north of Stourbridge, in the Midlands. Some others are planned at various venues throughout the year. A joy to behold event including most of the best glass dealers in the country. Not to be missed.

One of the charming miniatures which need no introduction I am sure. First produced in 1981 comprising 5 in 1981 ending with 19 in 1985 the last two of which are absolute rarities, a hippo and a whale, which we have never yet come across although one did arise not so long ago and fetched over £100. Nice. A great collectors range.

Probably one of the most charming birds to grace our British shoreline so expertly interpreted by the country’s finest glass animal maker. Paul Miller and his team make the most superb and extensive range of wildlife of any you may come across. I had the joy of being his agent during the eighties and thoroughly enjoyable it was too! His studio in Norfolk is still going strong with an animal dedicated team with a worldwide avid following of collectors. This one brings a smile to our face and is Ann’s favourits creature.
We can all see why! Pual started his glassmaking career with the famous Wedgewood Glass at Kings Lynn under the famous Ronnie Stennet Wilson  and is probably best known for the very recognisable glass Elephant which is still in the Langham range.

And now for something which very seldom gets featured by us – a stunning and very substantial piece by Siddy Langley. Best known for her early iridescent pieces when she ran her studio in the early eighties near Maidenhead in Berkshire , In latter years she moved to Devon where she now trades from a personal design set up in a most ecological form since becoming very conscious of the pollution created by the iridescent process  created as a result, and in particular of the materials released into the atmosphere from iridescence making.  Her designes now follow very strongly the themes of Flora and fauna and with very little imagination this can be witnessed in the above piece. Very substantial in both size and weight.

Not only a  fabulous example of the work of Richard Golding (Okra Glass/Station glass) but also embellished by one of this country’s most acomplished glass enamellers, Terri College. Produced when they collaborated in the 90’s for many productive years. Painted in powdered glass enamel and then fired at over 400* to set permanently.
Terri is also a very accomplished glass engraver having completed with Richard a replica of the most valuble piece of glass in history, a Roman piece known as The Portland Vase. A piece to cherish for two good reasons.

From Tim, a very special piece easily identified as a tribute to his Father’s very special (and labelled as his rarest piece – the Crizzle Stone) combined with an attenuated bottle but in Tim’s own style.  Made using the famous Italian style of Sommerso Glass which relates to several (usually 3) heavy layers of differently decorated or coloured glass. In this case a coloured centre, or first gather. Then cased in clear which is doused quickly in cold water which fractures the surface.  This is then coated in Silver Chloride which flows into the fissures creating the spider web effect. Then it is again heavily cased in clear glass before being shaped by hand giving a square section. Finally being cracked off the blowing iron after being attached at the base to a bridging iron. Then drawn up to create the attenuated neck. Simple as that!! A very complex and accomplished piece which needs the skill of a Master gassmaker to achieve.

Recently the studio was honoured with a prestigious award from the I.of W. Chamber for I. of W. Business awards in Tourism & Business Awards for Business of the Year 2025 Winner. Quite an accolade, and deservedly so, considering that the Isle of Wight has more tourist features than any other tourism area in the whole of the U.K. and so some stiff competition. Not bad for over 4 decades of hard dedicated work. Well done to Tim and his team.

As ever, our very best regards

Ron & Ann
